Ethereum Developer Virgil Griffith’s Prison Sentence Reduced by 7 Months
Ethereum developer Virgil Griffith received a reduced sentence of 56 months (from 63 months) for violating US sanctions by sharing cryptocurrency knowledge with North Korea.
Ethereum developer Virgil Griffith’s prison sentence was reduced by seven months this week, according to a court order.
Griffith was initially sentenced to 63 months (around five years) in April 2022 for violating US sanctions. Prosecutors accused him of traveling to North Korea in 2019 and delivering a presentation on using cryptocurrency and blockchain technology to evade sanctions.
U.S. District Judge Kevin Castel acknowledged challenges and disciplinary infractions Griffith faced in prison while justifying the reduced sentence. However, the judge emphasized the need to deter similar crimes and promote respect for law.
Griffith pleaded guilty to sanctions violations in 2021 before his trial began. The Justice Department argued he knowingly provided information that could assist North Korea in evading sanctions.
While Griffith’s lawyers requested a lighter sentence due to his clean criminal record and lack of financial harm caused, the government argued against leniency due to the “brazen participation” in the sanctions violation.
